Local Community

Young students explore what they can see and experience in the community they live in so they can build a foundation for comparison with other communities in older grades. They learn about physical features of their community by going for walks and sharing experiences they have in their communities. They explore their own role and responsibilities as members of a community. They learn about community helpers to understand that each person in a community has an important role to play to support others.

How Do I Become a...

Students will explore community helpers and ask what they would need to do in order to do that job when they grow up.

Primary students can form relationships with people in their local community in a variety of ways. They can become penpals with residents at a local retirement home, arrange social activities with other schools that are in the neighbourhood, or invite people from the community to come into the classroom for brief visits. The goal is to help students understand the connections that are vital in a community and for them to be able to see themselves as important members of their local community.
