Topics or activities to help build community in the intermediate classroom:
Circle Meetings
Student voice is an important part of building community. Class or circle meetings allow students the opportunity to share ideas, give feedback, and have input into class activity and classroom culture. It is also a space for the community to come together.
Daily Greetings and Check Ins
Your first interaction with your students is your chance to gauge mood, help them reset if needed, make a connection, and positively start off your day together.
Relationship Repair
Apologizing is a good topic for a class discussion early in the school year. It can be a good segue into discussions about empathy, point of view, forgiveness, or learning from mistakes depending on where your students take it.
Intro to Leadership
As intermediate students begin to take on more and more leadership roles in their school community, it is important that they gain insight into effective leadership.
