Students learn that the world is made up of many different cultures, beliefs and traditions. This theme involves getting to know each student in the class very well and it is absolutely critical that the classroom community is accepting of the differences in culture, belief, economics, and other areas.
Children are naturally drawn to learning about experiences of other children who are the same age. Easy access to videos online can provide a window into how children in communities that are near and far are similar or different from the students in your class.
After reading Todd Parr’s book, It’s Okay to be Different, create a class book that celebrates how each student sees themselves as different or unique. Discuss how these differences add to the beauty of the classroom community.
