It is important help Primary students learn that they will feel better, not worse, when they learn how to apologize for mistakes. They can be quick to say, “I’m sorry,” and then move on without considering the impact of their actions. A sincere apology includes three important steps.
1. Take ownership of behaviour.
In order to start a sincere apology, students need to take responsibility for their actions even if they did not intend to cause a problem. We all make mistakes but we need to admit our involvement before moving on with an apology.
2. Make it right.
Students need to find a respectful, reasonable, and related way to fix things with the person who is being apologized to. Primary students may need extra support to come up with solutions at this step.
3. Learn from the mistake and move forward.
We all make mistakes but it is important that students understand that they should not be repeating the same mistake once they have offered an apology.
