It is important to explore the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships.

You may want to start by creating a T-chart with the headings “Good Friends Do” on one side, and “Good Friends Don’t” on the other. Brainstorm as a class the kinds of things good friends do and alternately what they don’t do. Getting students to write their ideas on sticky notes and putting them on the chart is another idea, but this may lead to duplication.

The video “Healthy vs Unhealthy” gives some guidelines regarding healthy relationships.

A follow-up activity could be role playing scenarios and having students give opinions on whether they believe it’s a healthy relationship or not (see “good friends do and don’t” chart for scenario ideas; have students create kid generated role play ideas). Scenarios can be pulled out of a hat, acted out by a group, and then voted on by the class.
